One big problem with SME's as far as software developers are concerned - SME's want all their accounting functions computerized, but they are not willing to pay the price. They think that after paying for the cost of the software, everything else comes free - installation, migration, user training, debugging and technical services. I used to own a small software company and market a canned accounting software which my company developed for the SME's, but I closed the business and joined a private firm. My customers were just unwilling to pay for "services" and after covering the salaries of my programmers I am left with nothing for myself. When I started to accumulate debts, I gave up.

Hi Dondi,

3 years ago, I applied for an SBG loan for opening a branch office in manila and market my more affordable ERP_type software to various vertical markets there. I went through the feasibility documentation and other detailed requirement process for over a year, eliminating each requirement along the way and on the last minute, just when i felt high on the brink of my last hurdle - a new set of formal requirements were presented to me. Right at that moment, my hopeful spirit died in me, and I somehow managed to contain myself and just walked out of the SBG office swearing silently never again.

My only consolation now is whenever sulong is mentioned in any meeting or forum...I am able to gather laughter when I say that the program is now called "ATRAS". Not because I'm bitter but simply because I have learned to accept the bad that goes with the good in this only country of ours.

All I can say is that agency needs a major shot in the arm or a major reengineering rework. Good luck to them.

Please spare me from being part of this focused group...just want to share with you my first hand experience.

Best regards,

Mike Jurado

Checkout my new book (http://www.ricebowlandchips.com) coming out around May 2005 first in the U.S. then eventually here.

It discusses the nature of tech financing, and explains why equity is a better choice than loans.

It also gives a brief history of why the NASDAQ was started in the U.S.

Hi Dondi,

I did try to inquire with DTI/SB's SULONG some years ago, only to find out that their requirements somehow not applicable to startups like ours.

Anyway, I'm interested to attend this SMITEs discussion if will be given a slot.

Thanks.

Hi Dondi,
I am very much interested in attending the discussion as we are into financial services. Hopefully with the discussion we would know how we can extend to support to SME's especially IT related companies.

Congratulations on a productive focus group discussion, Dondi. Let's hope the direction set at that meeting will bring Filipino SMITEs together to compete in the global market. :)
